Tanner Dome Rock Climbing

Premier granite climbing destination with over 80 routes on excellent rock, offering challenges for climbers of all skill levels.

Tanner Dome stands as one of Colorado's premier climbing destinations, featuring over 80 routes on beautiful granite walls that attract climbers from across the country. Located about 11 miles south of Canon City, the crags offer quality rock and varied climbing in a stunning high-desert setting. The routes range from beginner-friendly to expert-only, with options for sport climbing, traditional climbing, and top-roping. The granite is generally solid and well-featured, rewarding technique and providing excellent friction. Route lengths vary from single-pitch to multi-pitch adventures. For visiting climbers, the area is well-developed with established anchors and clear approach trails. Local climbing shops can provide current conditions and beta on specific routes. A guidebook is recommended for first-time visitors, as the area is extensive. The climbing season runs primarily from March through November, with spring and fall offering the most comfortable temperatures. Summer climbing is possible but best done in the morning before afternoon heat. Winter climbing is feasible on south-facing routes during dry periods. Facilities are minimal, so bring everything you need including plenty of water. The approach involves moderate hiking, so factor that into your energy budget for the day. Camping is available in the area for those planning multi-day climbing trips.
